How a Music Video Is Made: From Idea to Release

Many artists only see their music video on shoot day, but the shoot is just one stage of a longer journey. Once you understand how a music video is made from start to finish, you'll know where the time and money go, and where you can make a real difference. These are the stages I go through with every song.
1. Listening until the images appear
I listen to the song many times before writing anything. I'm looking for the core feeling and for the moments where the song turns: the first chorus, a repeating musical phrase, a pause before the peak. Those moments later become the video's key shots.
2. Writing the treatment
The concept is written in one or two pages with reference images for color, light and wardrobe. This document means the artist, the producer and the crew all see the same video before anyone picks up a camera.
3. Pre-production
This is where the idea becomes a plan:
- Scouting and choosing locations
- Casting and wardrobe
- The shot list: every shot, its size and movement
- An hour-by-hour shoot schedule
Good pre-production is the biggest saving in any budget.
4. The shoot
The day starts early with lighting and camera setup. The artist performs to playback so the lip sync is right. We cover the full performance from several angles, then the story and detail shots. I always leave time for unplanned shots, because some of the best ones happen by accident.
5. The edit
In the edit, the video is built on the song's rhythm. I pick the best performance for each line and place the story shots so they rise with the music. It takes patience; a good music video gets rearranged more than once.
6. Color and finishing
Color grading gives the video its character: warm, cold, dreamy, harsh. After that come titles or subtitles, and versions for each platform.
7. Release
Release is part of the work, not the end of it:
- A strong YouTube thumbnail
- A title and description with the artist and song name
- Short vertical clips for Reels and TikTok before and after launch
The bottom line
A great music video isn't made on shoot day. It's made in every stage before and after it. If you have a finished song and want to start from step one, get in touch.
